Members of Kodak Imaging Network Services usually spend their time integrating solutions and supporting customers within hospital environments. However, their expertise was required recently outside of the medical imaging arena with an unusual request to assist a project initiated by the Company’s Entertainment Imaging Group.
The plan was to install and test a Kodak prototype digital projector in a London cinema to project pictures from digital data rather than a more conventional film projector. High-integrity digital pre-show advertising content needed to be transmitted to a number of screens with a timed interface between the main movie projector and the prototype using a Kodak designed system.
The experience and skills gained from a number of successful PACS installations made the team ideal candidates to support the associated networking issues. Prior to installation, Trevor Bradley from Imaging Network Services, Kodak’s European Region refined the site specification documents, working through any connectivity problems. Paul Swinburn, Southern Regional Operations Manager and Digital Field Engineers Ryan Gigg and Jayson McCullough from the UK then joined Trevor in assisting the US-based project team to carry out the installation and equipment trials resolving a host of technical issues along the way.
“ The cinema industry is generally nervous about the transition to digital projection, including the quality of service support. They see the unique Kodak ability to leverage existing expertise in network data distribution as a major comfort factor in the conversation process,” said Denis Kelly, Kodak Cinema Operations Manager, Europe.
“This project was looking forward to the days when celluloid will no longer be distributed around the UK and movies will be delivered electronically,” added Trevor Bradley. “The expertise we have gained with network issues across the NHS stood us in good stead here. We made an important contribution to the success of the project, laying the groundwork for Kodak’s entry into the digital cinema market.”
