Kodak and Arts for Schools in Harrow have announced the winners of the Harrow Schools’ Kodak 2003 Photographic Award. A special awards ceremony and exhibition of entries was held at the Harrow Museum and Heritage Centre on Monday 14th July to mark the achievements of the young people involved.
The aim of the award is to promote the use of photography in schools, using both traditional film and contemporary digital imaging, both within the curriculum and as an out of school activity. It also aims to encourage young people to use photography within their leisure time.
Kodak supports photography in all LEA schools across the Borough of Harrow and supplies consumable materials free of charge, including single-use cameras, film, chemicals, photographic and inkjet paper, specifically to enable schools to enter this annual photographic award. This is the 10th year that the award has been run with entries increasing year on year. The overall theme for 2003 was entitled “On The Edge” attracting over 170 entries.
The five category winners and 19 highly commended awards were presented with their prizes of Kodak cameras by The Mayor of Harrow, Cllr Mano Dharmarajah and Peter Blackwell, Chairman and Managing Director of Kodak Limited.
The Overall Award Winner for 2003, which recognised the outstanding image for all categories went to Year 7 pupil:
Bradley Faulkner from Stag Lane Middle School
The Overall School Award for 2003, which recognised the commitment of the school to photography and imaging went to:
Rooks Heath High School for its introduction of photography at GCSE level through its participation in the award over recent years.
The exhibition of all the winning entries, both traditional and digital images, was unveiled by Kodak on the presentation evening and can be viewed at the Museum and Heritage Centre between 15th-26th July as part of the 2003 Harrow Arts Festival.
John Tucker, Curriculum Leader, Arts for Schools said, “The enthusiasm for photography and imaging across Harrow schools is growing and we have seen an increased entry this year. We were particularly pleased to see entries from a number of special schools across the Borough, clearly demonstrating that photography as a media for learning and developing new skills can be enjoyed by everyone.”
