Kodak Starts Countdown to the ATHENS 2004 Olympic Games

29th September 2003 – The countdown has begun – in just 317 days, Team GB will march into the Olympic Stadium in Athens, home to the first Modern Olympic Games in 1896, and Kodak will once again be visible as one of the TOP sponsors.

Kodak's association with the Olympic Games spans 108 years back to that first event when Kodak ran an advertisement in support of the 1896 Olympic Games. Today, Kodak is still meeting the imaging needs of the Olympic Movement via its broad array of imaging technology in the areas of consumer, professional, commercial and health imaging.

Behind-the-scenes at the 2004 Olympic Games, Kodak will supply many vital services to enable the Games to run smoothly, including:

  • Supplying accreditation credentials for all participants, staff and personnel at the Games – anticipated for ATHENS 2004 to be 350,000 badges and 80,000 visa credentials
  • The Kodak Image Centre supplying traditional and digital products and services for 1,000 professional photographers. Processing over 100,000 rolls of film, alongside scanning, printing and transmitting thousands of digital still images around the world
  • A Polyclinic to provide state-of-the-art medical diagnostic imaging equipment and services to help doctors to acquire and view digital X-ray images, enabling them to provide fast and accurate treatments. During the 2000 Summer Games in Sydney the total number of imaging examinations exceeded 1,600.

Visitors on-site won't be forgotten either with Kodak providing:

  • Kodak PictureMaker kiosks where they can interact with a wide variety of the latest Kodak digital technologies.
  • Kodak backpackers who will provide roving retail services at all Olympic venues to ensure no-one misses the opportunity to take pictures and share the Olympic experience.

For the duration of the 2004 Games, Kodak will extend its highly successful “ Share Moments. Share Life .” campaign with a dedicated Kodak Olympic theme “ Share the Spirit. Capture the Moment .” This theme encapsulates not only the essence of the Olympic Games but underscores the role played by Kodak products in generating the majority of images taken each time the Games are held.

A special Kodak web site will be created to showcase the latest Olympic information and day-to-day updates on all the action.

Kodak's communication to the Greek people for the 2004 Games is already underway with the recent unveiling of a giant smiling face, made up of over 16,500 images of individual smiling Greeks. Entitled “The Whole of Greece in One Smile”, the collage was secured around a building in Athens in a popular tourist area and established an on-going reminder of Kodak's sponsorship in the run-up to the Games.

“Kodak's commitment to the Olympic Games underscores the Company's strategy to help people capture and share life's most important memories,” said Jennie Wild, Kodak's UK Olympic Project Manager. “Like no other event, the Olympic Games provide a unique global platform for the Kodak brand. We have set up Olympic marketing teams across the whole of Europe to ensure we make the most of our involvement in the ATHENS 2004 Olympic Games with a uniquely powerful programme designed to bring the excitement and opportunity to our customers and employees alike.”

Kodak's association with the Olympic Movement continues with ATHENS 2004 followed by Torino 2006 and Beijing 2008.
